New Income Program: Up to $24,000 for Rural Families!
A new guaranteed income program is launching in the US: The program called Rural Income for Self-Empowerment Guaranteed Minimum Income (RISE GMI) is being rolled out in three rural counties. A focus of this project is to support needy households living in these communities. The initiative, run by the nonprofit organization GiveDirectly, will be funded with a total of approximately $38.4 million, which will be distributed unconditionally.
In total, around 1,600 people or households are expected to benefit from the tax-free payments. Each eligible family can receive up to $24,000 over 16 months, making a monthly amount of $1,500. The conditions for participation are clearly defined: Applicants must live in one of the three affected counties and have a household income of no more than 200% of the federal poverty level.
Application periods and first payments
For residents of Beaufort County, North Carolina, the application period begins November 3rd and ends November 21st. The first payment for these participants will be made on January 21, 2026. In Mercer County, West Virginia, applications can be filed between October 14 and October 31, with the first payment on December 17. For residents of Warren County, Mississippi, the application period will open December 1-19 and the first payment will be distributed on February 18, 2026.
The program is funded by a grant from the family of Stack Overflow co-founder Jeff Atwood. This commitment is intended to create sustainable support for needy households in rural regions.
The aim of the initiative
The RISE GMI program aims to provide financial assistance and stability for families in rural communities. In times of economic uncertainty, such an income program can make a decisive contribution to raising the standard of living of those affected and enabling them to gain self-confidence and self-empowerment. The initiative could therefore be an important step towards combating poverty through direct financial support.
