Reddit, one of the largest micro-posting sites on the internet, is reportedly venturing further into the world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The company is testing a new feature that will allow users to set NFTs as profile pictures, something Twitter is already doing. Reddit released its own series of NFTs called Cryptosnoos in June 2021, albeit through a limited release.

Reddit to delve further into NFTs

Reddit, one of the internet's leading micro-posting sites, is reportedly testing NFT-related features on its platform. According to Techcrunch, the company is testing a feature that allows its users to set NFTs as profile pictures on the platform. The announcement was made by Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt, who stated:

We're constantly looking for ways to provide value to users and communities on Reddit. At the moment we are testing the possibility of using NFTs as profile pictures (avatars) and verifying ownership.

Rathschmidt further explained that this is a small, internal test and the company has not yet made a decision when it comes to implementing this functionality for the general user base. Reddit is following the example of another social media giant, Twitter, which recently launched a similar feature that allows verified users of the platform to set NFTs as their profile pictures and verify ownership of these assets.

Reddit's previous NFT moves

The reported internal testing isn't actually Reddit's first foray into the world of NFTs. Last year, the company released its own batch of non-fungible tokens called Cryptosnoos. Users who purchased these NFTs had a profile picture feature on Reddit, and the platform included perks for owners of these assets - some of which are now priced at over $100 ETH on Opensea. However, the new tests would allow all types of NFTs to be used in the same way, with Reddit being less restrictive on the issue.

Reddit has also been open to the idea of cryptocurrency on its platform. The company started a token beta program in December that would allow certain subreddits to be rewarded for their contributions in native tokens. These tokens would live on a blockchain with Arbitrum, Ethereum's L2 solution, as their base. The company did not comment on the network on which the NFTs included in the test were based.
