Crypto Nightmare: $3 Million in XRP Lost to Hackers!

On October 21, 2025, the tragic story of a cryptocurrency investor from North Carolina came to light. Brandon LaRoque, a 54-year-old crypto enthusiast, has suffered a loss of $3 million in XRP due to a devastating cyberattack. This incident has seriously jeopardized not only his financial security but also the future of his family.

LaRoque had saved a considerable sum of 1.2 million XRP since 2017 to prepare for old age. But on October 12, 2023, he experienced every investor's nightmare: hackers had managed to steal the cryptocurrencies. They had previously carried out two test transfers of just 10 XRP each to check whether the address was active.

The loss and its consequences

After successfully completing the test transfers, the attackers transferred the majority of LaRoque's savings to a new address. The crypto investor describes the loss as serious for his family's financial future. LaRoque now finds himself forced to go back to work after losing all of his retirement savings.

In addition to his investments in cryptocurrencies, he had also invested in precious metals, but not to the same extent as crypto. The situation is made all the more depressing because LaRoque had trusted the security of hardware wallets. The wallet's manufacturer, Ellipal, confirmed that the loss was not due to a hardware failure, but rather resulted from insecure handling of the wallet's seed phrase.

The role of cybersecurity

LaRoque imported his seed phrase online, resulting in the creation of a hot wallet - a condition particularly vulnerable to online risk. The stolen funds went through over 120 Ripple-to-Tron transactions before ending up on Huione, a Cambodian company sanctioned by US authorities.

This incident once again highlights how important cybersecurity is for crypto investors. With the increasing number of cyberattacks targeting cryptocurrency users, the community should remain vigilant and consider the safest practices to protect their assets.
