Spicedao paid $ 3 million for a copy of Jodorowsky's Dune
Until 1974 the Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky had become a cult figure among film lovers. His first two pictures, el Topo and The Holy Berg , had mixed surrealistic, psychedelic pictures with crazy actions and Arkan religious symbolism and made it one of the most prominent names in the underground cinema.
his next job should be the biggest so far. A French consortium had acquired the rights dune , Frank Herbert's much-loved science fiction novel (and recently appeared on the big screen), and asked Jodorowsky. He went to the city for the project. Salvador Dalí, Mick Jagger and Orson Welles were discussed as cast members, Pink Floyd was supposed to make the soundtrack, and the final script came in at 2 p.m. It is not surprising that no studio would raise the money to finance it. The project collapsed.
The fascination for the stunning ambitious vision of the project remained, so that a documentary was made about it in 2014 and has become a rare book about the unpaid film that contains the script, concept drawings and other pre -production materials.
so popular that one of the estimated 20 areas for sale is auctioned for a lot of money. And so it was at the end of November when Christies sold one of the copies for 2.66 million euros-almost 100 times his estimate.
What brings us directly to this announcement by Spice Dao on Sunday:
We have won the auction for € 2.66 million. Now our mission is:
1. Publishing the book (insofar as legally permissible)
2. Produce a limited original animation series inspired by the book and sell it to a streaming service
3. Support derived projects from the Community PIC.TWitter.com/g4qnf6yzbp

If you don't know what a DAO or a decentralized anonymous organization is, let us explain it. In fact, it is a governance structure in which every member of the organization-often by buying a cryptocurrency (in this case called Spice)-becomes a decision-maker in the governance's governance. The governance rules are defined in smart contracts that were previously designed by the original organizers, but afterwards every decision of the entity is made by the token owners. Presented as an antidote to the centralized management of modern technology companies, it is as if you were the shareholder of a crowdfunding project, but without being able to transfer the decision-making process to a CEO or a management team. (And that is probably the slightest problem of the model. Read Izzy or Stephen Diehl for more.)
But the problem with Spice Dao is not so much a philosophical, but a legal one.
We do not know why we have to state this, but by buying a copy of something you do not receive exclusive rights to monetize the content. It is literally the foundation of the right of intellectual property and thus large parts of capitalism.
Has SPICEDAO solved the problem? According to Buzzfeed, the copyrights of the script and the illustrations of the book are at Jodorowsky himself and the artists Jean Giraud and HR Geiger. Both died in the past ten years. Without the deregistration of your estate, Spicedao is dead in the water.
Even at that time, the first declared action by Spice Dao - "to make the book public" - was already made pointless because Jodorowsky's dune was made available to search for Google photos before the auction ended. Hoppla.
In fact, the buyers of the Spice token currently have a 3 million dollar book in their pocket, which was last sold in March 2019 for $ 42,500. It may not be the craziest that we heard in the deep, dark annals of the kingdom. But it's definitely up there.
