Buffett sells BYD shares: the ascent and case in the e-car market!

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway recently sold his entire share package to the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD. This reports Daily Hodl. The decision marked the end of a commitment over 17 years of engagement, which began in 2008 with the purchase of 225 million shares for a total of around $ 230 million.

Buffett began gradually reducing the position of Berkshire in BYD in August 2022. After the last SEC announcement, Berkshire Hathaway Energy no longer has BYD shares. In the business figure of Berkshire on March 31, 2025, BYD is managed with a value of $ 0, a dramatic decline of $ 415 million, as stated in December 2024.

Development of the BYD shares

The BYD shares have performed an impressive performance since the original purchase of Berkshire Hathaway. With a current price of around $ 13.62 per share, the share has increased by impressive 2,332 % since the final course of around $ 0.56 in 2008.

Li Yunfei, the general manager of BYD, paid tribute to the many years of support from Buffett and the late Charlie Munger. He noticed that Berksire's share had fallen below 5 % by June of the previous year. Yunfei expressed his gratitude for investing and support in the past 17 years.

The decision to separate from BYD could be a strategic realignment for Berkshire Hathaway in the rapidly changing automotive industry, in which the competitive landscape is increasingly shaped by new actors and technologies.
