We don't believe in cryptocurrencies - Emerging Markets

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe continues to reject cryptocurrencies, but is interested in developing their own digital currency, said its governor.

central bank does not believe in cryptos

The governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ), John Mangudya, said his institute was interested in creating a digital central bank currency (CBDC). However, the central bank does not believe in cryptocurrencies, he added.

according to a bloomberg test report made Mangudya during an interview Ncube, an experienced Zimbabwischen journalist. In comments that seemed to be a repetition of the recently declared position of the government to be digital currencies, Mangudya shared the considerations of the central bank as they want to enter into the footsteps of other countries that have introduced CBDCs.

he explained:

As a central bank, we do not believe in cryptocurrencies. We believe in the digital currency of the central bank, which basically tries to say: "How do we have an e-simbababwe-dollar in contrast to a cryptocurrency?"

As already reported by Bitcoin.com News, a Zimbabwischer government officer confirmed in November that his government collected views on CBDCs and cryptocurrencies. The official's statements led to speculation that Zimbabwe plans the introduction of cryptocurrencies. However, these claims were later from the state.

rbz sends team to Nigeria

Instead of introducing cryptocurrencies, the report suggested that the RBZ are planning to send a team to Nigeria, the first African country to introduce a CBDC. According to the report, the team will learn from the experience of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in connection with the introduction of e-naira.

In addition to the planned visit to Nigeria, Mangudya said that the RBZ already had its own fintech team that works very hard. According to the governor, the central bank wants to ensure that the RBZ does not remain behind other central banks that also work on its own CBDCs.
