North Korean hackers stolen crypto worth $ 400 million last year
The blockchain analysis platform Chainalysis published an analysis of North Korean hackers and its unwashed cryptocurrency stocks on Thursday. The company described:
North Korean cybercriminals had an excellent year in 2021 and started at least seven attacks on cryptocurrency platforms that captured digital assets worth almost $ 400 million last year.
"These attacks were mainly against securities and centralized stock exchanges," said the company.
The hackers "used phishing bait, code exploits, malware and advanced social engineering" in order to delimit funds from the hot wallets of companies to the addresses controlled by the Democratic People's Republic (DVRK), added chainalysis and led to:
After North Korea had gained custody for the funds, they began with a careful washing process to cover up and pay the funds.
chainalysis found that “North Korean hacking activity increased again in 2021. From 2020 to 2021, the number of hacks connected to North Korea rose from four to seven, and the value extracted from these hacks grew by 40 %.”
The company also stated that Bitcoin is now less than a quarter of the cryptocurrencies stolen by North Korea, and added:
In 2021, only 20 % of the stolen funds were Bitcoin, while 22 % were either ERC 20 token or old coins. And for the very first time Ether made a large part of the stolen funds with 58 %.
"More than 65 % of the stolen funds of the DVRK were washed this year by mixers, compared to 42 % in 2020 and 21 % in 2019, which indicates that these threat players have chosen a more careful approach every year," concluded the company.
