Google allows blockchain -based content in the Play Store: NFTS are the focus

Google allows apps and games, the so -called “blockchain -based content”, in the future. This emerges from the new guidelines that will apply from December. These are primarily so-called non-fungable tokens (NFTS), which are intended to serve as unique ownership customers for digital content.

According to Joseph Mills, product manager on Google, the company is looking forward to seeing creative in-app experiences and user loyalty through unique NFT rewards. Developers are helped to expand their business.

In order to sell or provide such "tokenized digital assets", developers must now clearly state this in the Play Console on the "App content" page in the explanatory form for financial functions. This also has to be informed about in-app products with blockchain cover. However, no potential income from game or commercial activities may be advertised or glorified, and no purchases must be made in which the value of the NFTS is not known at the time of purchase. Loot boxes with random content are excluded from this regulation.

Some experts from the so -called Web3 view

nfts as a way to upgrade games with blockchain technology. They argue that digital content would actually belong to the players because they are not tied to the servers of the game companies, but exist as an entity in a decentralized blockchain. This could open up independent second markets on which the token owners can take their property with them and act. In its communication, Google mentions that it is exchanged by industrial partners over further steps towards blockchain and secondary markets.

However, NFTS so far have been of little enthusiasm in the game community. Several games that were originally contained NFT elements had to withdraw their plans for massive criticism. The community rejects this type of content because they are seen as a means of creating “deficiency and exclusion”. An example of this is Microsoft, which does not want to integrate NFTs at Minecraft to give all players access to all content.

Other providers such as Electronic Arts are more open to NFTs. As part of a partnership with Nike, it was announced that the NFT platform "Swoosh" by Nike will be taken into account in future EA sports games. This allows players to wear virtual sneakers that they previously acquired as NFT from Nike.

A successful application of NFTS can also be seen on the Reddit Social Media platform, where "Collectible Avatars" are offered. These are collecting pictures based on the polygon blockchain. However, Reddit avoids the term NFT and thus facilitates users access to these content.

The new Google guidelines for the Play Store give developers the opportunity to offer their apps and games with blockchain -based content. Although NFTS are controversial in the game community, Google opens new opportunities for creative in-app experiences with this decision and supports developers in expanding their business.
