Digital Yuan payments are becoming increasingly important in Hong Kong, as over 200 business accepts the e-CNY payments. This initiative takes place as part of China's efforts to make its central banking digital currency (CBDC) known beyond the borders.

The list of providers who accept digital Yuan payments mainly includes shops and outlets that are geared towards mainland Chinese. These include the spirits dealer Duty Zero by CDF, the IW Hotel in KWun Tong, the Vango Convenience Store chain and the Balabala children's clothing store. In order to increase the incentive for mainland chinese to issue your digital Yuan stocks in selected shops in Hong Kong, you will receive discounts of up to around $ 14. This campaign runs until the end of August of this year.

Chinese banks have already tried to expand the cross -border payment options for their customers. So far, these efforts have focused on Hong Kong and Macau, since these two regions belong to China, but have different economic systems and currencies. The advertising event and the discount offer are carried out by the Bank of China, one of the largest state commercial banks in China. The bank's Hong Kong branch is co -organizer of the campaign. The discount coupons can only be used for purchases in Hong Kong. In order to redeem the discounts, consumers on the Chinese mainland have to scan QR codes from their digital Yuan money exchanges in the participating shops. However, citizens from the provinces of Jiangsu, Guangdong and Shenzhen have the opportunity to receive their coupons before they leave Hong Kong via the apps of the Bank of China or local bank branches. The vouchers are valid for 15 days after redemption.

The Bank of China Hong Kong has announced that it will strengthen their “skills to acquire digital Yuan” and to help dealers in Hong Kong in providing CBDC payment services for cross-border visitors. The period from July to August is the traditional high season for tourists in the Hong Kong shops, and the bank expects an increased customer frequency and boosting consumption during its cross-border shopping festival.

It should be noted that Hong Kong is not yet officially part of the pilot zone for the digital Yuan and therefore no digital yuan walls can be opened. The buyers are therefore warned to open a digital Yuan wallet before starting the trip in the existing pilot area. Hong Kong dealers only have to download a simple software upgrade for their existing point-of-sale (POS) payment systems to accept CBDC payments.
