A coordinated strike from Europol, Interpol and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has led to the arrest of two “productive” ransomware operators who allegedly made ransom claims of up to 70 million euros. In addition, cryptocurrencies worth $ 1.3 million were confiscated.

Two productive ransomware operators who are suspected of having carried out a number of attacks and demanding ransom of up to 70 million euros [$ 81 million] were arrested in Ukraine.

The arrests followed "a coordinated strike between the French national gendarmerie (Gendarmerie Nationale), the Ukrainian national police (нацοцв wear полuls уолuls) and the US Federal Criminal Office (FBI) with coordination of Europol and Interpol", the European Union for cooperation at the cooperation at the Criminal prosecution (Europol) explained. The arrests took place on September 28th.

The authorities carried out seven house searches. They confiscated $ 375,000 in cash, two luxury vehicles worth 217,000 euros and $ 1.3 million in cryptocurrencies.

"The criminals would use malware and steal sensitive data from these companies before they encrypt their files," continued Europol. "You would then offer a decryption key for a ransom payment of several million euros and thus threaten to disclose the stolen data on the Dark Web if your claims are not met."
