PECTRA-upgrade: The next step for Ethereum

Ethereums upcoming PECTRA upgrade will have significant improvements for the network. The aim is to increase scalability, reduce transaction fees and to introduce new functions for smart accounts. The upgrade combines two separate upgrades: the prague upgrade , which focuses on the execution layer, and the electra-upgrade that influences the layer of consensus. Together they form the pectra upgrade and represent another important milestone in Ethereum's development timetable.

Preparation for the PECTRA upgrade

The PECTRA upgrade follows the Dencun upgrade, which was implemented in March 2024. Dencun was a hard fork that aimed to reduce the transaction fees for Layer 2 solutions and to improve the overallability of Ethereum. Building on this foundation, PECTRA introduces additional improvements that increase the efficiency and flexibility of the Ethereum blockchain.

Ethereum developer Terence TSAO confirmed that the PECTRA upgrade on March 5, 2025 was successfully started on the Sepolia test network . This was a crucial step in the test phase after a small setback occurred on the Holesky test network due to validator deficiency configurations. These test networks are crucial to ensure smooth provision before implementing in the Mainset.

Ethereum Pectra's two -stage rollout

The PECTRA upgrade is implemented in two phases:

phase 1: mid -March 2025

  • doubling the Layer 2 Blob capacity : The capacity is increased from three to six blobs per block, reducing traffic jams and reducing the fees.
  • account abstraction : The payment of gas fees is made possible with stable coins such as USDC and DAI, which offers additional flexibility of payment.
  • increased validator-staking limits : The staking limit is raised from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH, which enables large-scale staking operations.

Phase 2: late 2025 or early 2026

  • Implementation of Clees Trees : These replace Merkle-Patricia tries with a more efficient data structure, which improves data storage and synchronization.
  • Peer Data Availability Sampling (Peerdas) : This increases scalability by verifying nodes transaction data without having to save everyone.

Important advantages of the PECTRA upgrade

  1. improved scalability : increases the transaction throughput, which makes Ethereum more efficient for dapps and increasing network demand.
  2. Lower transaction fees : Optimized data storage and processing reduce gas fees for users and developers.
  3. Smart Accounts : These enable more complex transaction designs that combine several actions in a single transaction.
  4. increased security : progressive cryptographic techniques improve data protection and the safety of smart contracts.
  5. Important Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPS) in the pectra upgrade

The PECTRA upgrade includes 11 critical Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPS) that aim to optimize the network:

    • eip-7251 : increases the validator staking limits from 32 ETH to 2,048 eth.
    • eip-7691 : doubles the blob data capacity per block.
    • eip-7623 : adapts the costs for call data.
    • EIP-7702 : introduces smart accounts that have standard walls act as smart contracts.
    • eip-6110 : accelerates the validator activation.
    • eip-7002 : simplified validator withdrawals.
    • eip-7685 : improves communication between execution and consensus.
    • eip-2537 : reduces transaction costs through faster cryptographic operations.
    • EIP-2935 : extends the log history of 51 minutes to 27 hours.
    • EIP-7549 : optimizes the validator voting.
    • EIP-7840 : introduces flexible blob configurations.

    Outlook: Gle Trees and beyond

Ethereum's long-term timetable includes the introduction of clever Trees , a key feature in the verge phase from Ethereum's development plan according to the Merge. Clever Trees will significantly improve the efficiency of data storage, reduce hardware requirements and enable almost immediate node synchronization. This will further improve the user -friendliness and decentralization of Ethereum.

With the PECTRA upgrade, which is planned for 2025, Ethereum takes another big step towards its vision of a more scalable, more efficient and more user-friendly blockchain. Stay tuned for further updates while Ethereum is developing.
