Data leak at Coinbase: 10,000 customer information sold for millions!
Today, October 10, 2025, the criminal activities of a former Coinbase customer service employee become known. Ashita Mishra, employed by outsourcing firm TaskUs, is suspected of selling personal information of more than 10,000 cryptocurrency exchange users to criminals. Using her position, she collected sensitive data by taking photos of her computer screens with her cell phone. This is part of a large-scale data leak that has a massive impact on those affected.
The court documents suggest that Mishra was part of a “sophisticated hub-and-spoke conspiracy.” In this network, she and an accomplice led smaller groups of TaskUs employees who were unwittingly complicit in the conspiracy. This sophisticated structure allowed the criminals to continue stealing sensitive personal information (PII) even if a member of the conspiracy was arrested. The scale of the data breach is staggering: a total of 69,461 people were affected, according to a report from the Maine Attorney General's Office.
Amount of data stolen
Mishra's phone contained the information of over 10,000 Coinbase customers, which included names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, masked Social Security numbers (last four digits only), masked bank account numbers, and some bank account identifiers. In addition, the information included images of ID cards, account details and limited company information. This shows the serious security gaps that exist at Coinbase and its partners.
Financial consequences for Coinbase
Coinbase itself is now facing enormous financial challenges. The company refuses to give in to the hackers' demands, but estimates that the cost of remediating the incident and voluntary refunds will be between $180 million and $400 million. To increase security, Coinbase has already cut ties with the involved TaskUs employees and other foreign agents and further tightened controls. This may require additional measures to restore trust among users.
The developments surrounding this data leak shed critical light on security practices in the area of data processing and the handling of sensitive customer information. The investigation is ongoing as Coinbase continues to work to minimize the impact of the incident and protect affected customers. According to Daily Hodl, the consequences for those affected and the company are far from over.
