Square Enix Considers Robust Entry” into Blockchain Gaming as Part of Business Strategy –
Square Enix, one of the largest developers and publishers in the gaming world, has recognized the importance of NFTs and blockchain gaming for the future of the company. In its recent briefing session, Square Enix considered a “robust entry” into the blockchain gaming sector as part of its mid-term strategy process.
Square Enix enters the blockchain market
Square Enix, developer of popular gaming franchises such as Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts, has announced that it will expand its business model to address the blockchain gaming market. The company made these comments in its most recent earnings briefing session on November 5, where Square Enix stated that it would make a "robust entry" into the blockchain gaming arena as part of its mid-term business strategy process.
In the briefing, Square Enix recognized the changing mindset of players wanting more control over the universe they interact with. Additionally, the company states that the gaming world is moving towards a decentralized model and that token economies are becoming mainstream and expanding in every game. The presentation in the briefing specified:
In addition to the type of content creation we traditionally do, we will focus on blockchain games based on token economies as a form of decentralized content.
NFT proof of concept successful
However, a company as large as Square Enix can't just dive into a new market without doing some sort of test first. It turns out that the company has already released an NFT drop based on a franchise called Million Arthur, which launched back in 2012 and was primarily featured in manga and mobile games in Japan. The company explained this as a proof of concept and managed to successfully connect the NFT market with one of its franchises.
The experiment was able to sell its entire press in less than a month after launching on October 14th. The proof of concept is now over and the initiative is expected to move into the full commercialization phase. This means we may see NFTs of the company's famous franchises such as Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts.
Square Enix is the third major gaming company to express interest in blockchain gaming in less than a month. Ubisoft and Electronic Arts are also interested in the potential of these alternative technologies within the new concept of a more decentralized gaming panorama.
