Openea temporarily lowers the fees for NFT sales to zero

OpenSea, the marketplace giant for non-fungible tokens (NFT), announced some changes to its fee structure.

This is done in the middle of an open challenge by one of his competitors, which suggested that the NFT manufacturers boycott.

  • in a Tweet-Thread On Friday (February 17, 2023), OpenSea made some structural changes in the course of the hard competition due to the competing marketplace Blur.

Today we make some major changes:
1) Openea fee → 0 % for limited time
2) Conversion to optional creator income (at least 0.5 %) for all collections without on-chain enforcement (old and new)
3) Market places with the same guidelines are not blocked by the operator filter

  • One of the changes was the introduction of a zero percentage fee, which is usually 2.5 % with every second sale. However, the platform stated that the zero percent fee will apply for a limited period of time.
  • OpenSea also calculates a minimum license fee of 0.5 % for old and new NFT collections that do not use the on-chain enforcement method. In the meantime, sellers may pay a higher percentage.
  • In addition, the changes included an upgrade of the operator filter tool, "to enable sales via NFT marketplaces with the same guidelines (including Blur). Now developers no longer have to make the wrong choice if they receive income on OpenSea or Blur."
  • The latest development comes shortly after A blog entry Blur recommended on February 15, OpenSea to Boykott. According to the post, which came one day after the platform dropped blur-token should not be forced to choose which marketplace you deserve license fees in.
  • Blur, which started operating in October 2022 and does not raise any fees, seems to affect the market share of its competitor. Part of the Tweet Thread from OpenSea was:

"There was a massive shift in the NFT ecosystem. In October we started to see an important volume, and users switch to NFT marketplaces that do not fully enforce the income of the creators. Today, despite our efforts, this change has accelerated dramatically."

  • OpenSea, however, was optimistic and called the development "the beginning of a new era".
