Darknet Forum Dread is restarted after months of downtime due to a DDOS attack-
according to the web portal Darkdot.com and the anonymous journalist Darkdotfail, the popular Darknet Forum Dread has been closed for a month. The well-known forum that was a place for customers of the Darknet market (DNM) to discuss operational safety, evaluate certain providers and to talk about ideas for hidden deliveries has been absent for 30 days. The founder of the forum, "Hugbunter", has explained that it will restart in the near future.
The founder of the Dread Forum announces plans for a restart
In the underground world of the Darknet markets (DNMS), the Forum Dread was known to be a contact point for information. According to an update of January 1, 2023, which is hosted on Darkdot.com, the forum has not been available for a month. "Dread is an important source of truth in an anonymous community in which frauds occur," says the update. "The popular Tor forum on freedom of expression went offline on November 30, 2022 and still has to return." The update adds that the Dread Admin team usually publishes status updates on Reddit under/R/Dreadalert, but communication was sparse.
The anonymous journalist, known as a Darkdotfail, wrote about the problem on Twitter, and her website, Dark.Fail, also points out that Dread is currently offline. According to an update of January 5, 2023 on the website, Dread is offline and reader due to a DDOS attack. On January 2, 2023, the DNM and goal researcher wrote that the founder of Dread, Hugbunter, had privately confirmed that the forum would return. "Dread has been offline for a month now, Hugbunter has privately confirmed that it will return," wrote Darkdotfail. Two days later, Darkdotfail shared an update from the Reddit Forum/R/Dreadalert.
The data protection officer and anonymous journalist said :
Hugbunter has posted an update regarding the downtime of Dread on /R /Dreadalert. In the meantime, the team behind Incognito Market had a competing forum, Libre, coded and launched during the Deadead downtime. It never gets boring here.
The message of Hugbunter, which contains the founder's PGP signature, explains that the team "worked extremely hard to restore the service". In the message, the Dread founder estimates that the team is removed from a solid estimated arrival time (ETA) for about a week.
"At the moment we are about a week away from being able to give a solid ETA for a return of Dread, but I will say that we hope that it will be next week," said Hugbunter detailed . "This depends on the fact that there are no further problems, since we complete everything on the server page and also whether I can work through some of the code base in good time, but it is not an easy or small task - so no further pressure."
This is not the first time that Dread experiences a significantly long downtime. On September 30, 2019, Bitcoin.com News registered at the first major failure of the forum. At that time, Hugbunter's Totmann switch caused a temporary loss of control via the forum. However, Hugbunter returned shortly afterwards and validated the identity of the forum owner by the PGP key, which are connected to the Dread founder. With a few exceptions due to DDOS attacks, the forum remained actively November 2022 . In addition to Dread's failure due to DDOS attacks, the Tor project reported that the Tor network itself has increased by almost 50 %.
In the news of January 3, Hugbunter, the founder of Dread, explained that the DDOS problems of the forum were solved until his return and "any other service that needs help". Hugbunter promised that Dread will restart with a revised user experience and appropriate DDOS protection, and said: "The plans that I have with the relaunch and also for the near future will make it possible for us all to get ahead. We will continue to renew this area.
