Ali noticed how a small, specific change to the base layer of Bitcoin could unlock a variety of applications that can be created via layer-2 technology.

  • According to the developer, Bitcoin requires "very little modification" on its base layer to enable real "ZK-Rollups"-a layer-2 scaling solution for batch transactions that is usually used at Ethereum.
  • "These are just two surgical codes," said Ali, "As either op strong verification or op snark verification-and that is possible."
  • In view of the slow pace with which the base layer of Bitcoin tends to develop, Ali does not expect that the change will occur in about four to five years.
  • Even without these changes, Ali is confident that Bitcoin can be further developed in order to catch up with more developer-friendly chains. His company Stacks-a self-described Bitcoin Layer "1.5"-has developed a protocol called sbtc btc relatively decentralized from layer-1- chains.

  • "This type of technology is needed to really boost Bitcoin Defi," he said. "We have to make Bitcoin programmable and then put this BTC in intelligent contracts, put them in the hands of developers and then make them wild."
