The Dutch public prosecutor announced last week that in the past few months in cooperation with two other authorities, it has confiscated more than 25 million euros ($ 28.6 million) of cryptocurrencies.
The Fiscal Information and Investigation Service (Fiod), the National Criminal Investigation Service (DLR) and the public prosecutor's office (OM) worked together in various investigations, in which the focus was on the confiscation of crypto wallets, according to the announcement.
The Fiod is an authority of the Dutch government that is responsible for the investigation of financial crime. The National Criminal Police Service is part of the Dutch national police unit. The public prosecutor, also called OpenBaar Ministerie, is the organ of the prosecutors in the Dutch criminal justice system.
The announcement says:
In dozens of suspects, more than 25 million euros were confiscated in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum.
In the collection of criminal proceedings, various crypta organizations at home and abroad cooperated with Fiod and the public prosecutor. "They are obliged to do so in Dutch law," said the OM, adding that their cooperation made it possible to confiscate the content of various "crime-managed crypto wallets with a total value of more than 25 million euros".
However, the authorities said that the identity of the suspects was not always known in an investigation. Some of the suspects come from the Netherlands, others are foreigners. "Subject to the current international agreements, they are forwarded to the named foreign authorities," said the OM.
The public prosecutor also warned of the use of crypto as a means of payment for criminals and explained:
The possession and the use of cryptocurrencies is legal, but also popular with criminals. The reason for this is that criminal cryptocurrencies perceive as anonymous and can quickly be moved around the world. Cryptocurrencies are therefore often used as a means of payment for different types of crime.
The OM stated that cryptocurrencies in cybercrime such as ransomware and means of payment are used, for example to pay for hosting services. "In addition, we are increasingly encountering cryptocurrencies in the form of crime such as drug and human trafficking, fraud and tax evasion."
In addition, "the investigation also showed that criminal undesirable exchange courses counteract by converting cryptocurrencies into so-called 'stablecoins', such as z USDT .
