The Future of Tokenization: Real-World Assets (RWA) on the Blockchain

More and more crypto projects are turning to the topic of real-world assets (RWA) and bringing tokenized stocks onto the blockchain. Classic Wall Street is also increasingly recognizing the potential of RWA.

Last year, the introduction of Bitcoin ETFs gave the crypto industry a significant boost towards the traditional financial industry. Companies like BlackRock and Fidelity have already raised tens of billions in their Bitcoin ETFs. A new trend is emerging: the crypto industry is focusing specifically on Wall Street and is relying on the tokenization of real assets. An example is stocks from companies such as Apple, Tesla and Nvidia, which are represented as crypto tokens and are therefore blockchain compatible.

According to Chris Yin, co-founder and CEO of Plume Network, we are increasingly seeing investors who became successful through Bitcoin and similar cryptocurrencies also want to trade stocks - without leaving their familiar blockchain environment. Plume Network is therefore focusing on equity RWAs and is close to unlocking its mainnet. A key advantage of tokenized stock trading is 24/7 availability, faster and more cost-effective processing, and increased transparency for end customers. Project Backed has already tokenized shares of Tesla, Coinbase and Nvidia and highlights the opportunities presented by this approach in the decentralized finance (DeFi) space.

The traditional financial industry is also jumping on the RWA bandwagon. BlackRock launched the BUIDL initiative last year, and this RWA token recently surpassed $1 billion in total value locked (TVL) with continued rapid growth forecast. In a recent TV interview, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink expressed the expectation that the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will approve the tokenization of stocks and bonds. This would significantly simplify the handling of share voting rights. Currently, owners are required to be notified and obtain powers of attorney; If management is carried out via the blockchain, they could be informed automatically.

Conclusion: Is the tokenization of RWAs poised for a breakthrough in 2024?

Backed predicts that tokenized stocks ready for DeFi could attract up to $2 billion in capital by 2025. However, data from DeFiLlama, which already records $10 billion for the RWA sector, should be treated with caution as it largely captures institutional growth and could be distorted by double counting. Experts agree: RWA and tokenization will move billions of dollars in the future, and both the crypto industry and traditional Wall Street want to secure a significant share of this market.
