The US Justice Ministry (DOJ) announced on Sunday that an employee of the Ministry of Navy, who sold restrictive data for cryptocurrency, was arrested for espionage allegations.

Jonathan Toebbe, who served as a nuclear engineer, was assigned to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, also known as Naval Reactors. He had an active national security check by the US Department of Defense, which gave him access to restricted information.

he and his wife, Diana Toebbe, "sold information that is known as a limited data about the construction of nuclear -powered warships, to a person they believed that they were a representative of a foreign power," said the doj and added:

In reality, this person was a hidden FBI agent. The Toebbes were charged with a criminal complaint about alleged violations of the nuclear law.

"In the lawsuit, a conspiracy for the transmission of information about the construction of our nuclear submarines is charged to a foreign nation," said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland.

Toebbe instructed the covert FBI agent to pay him in Monero ( xmr ) crypto-currency. According to the complaint, he told the FBI agent:

I will give you a Monero address ... I am very aware of the risks of the blockchain analysis of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies and believe that Monero offers both of us excellent.

The first sale took place in West Virginia in June. The undercover agent sent the nuclear engineer $ 10,000 in Monero as a payment in good faith and a further $ 20,000 for privacy Coin after receiving an SD card with limited data to submarine core reactors.

The couple sold another SD card in August with limited data to the undercover agent for $ 70,000 in Monero, which increases the total amount paid so far to $ 100,000.

According to the Doj, "the FBI Jonathan and Diana Toebbe arrested on October 9, after lying another SD card on a 'Dead Drop' in a second place in West Virginia."
