Ethereum users benefit from record-breaking low gas fees despite the falling ETH course-a look at the Dencun upgrade and the future of PECTRA

Ethereum (ETH): Transaction fees on a historical low, ETH course still falls

Ethereum (ETH) users currently benefit from drastically reduced transaction fees that have decreased significantly compared to the previous year. This positive development comes in an intensive competition between Smart Contract platforms. Interestingly, the ETH course does not show a positive tendency despite the sunken fees.

Ethereum gas fees historically low

On March 13, 2024, Ethereum received an important upgrade, which is called Dencun upgrade. It consists of a combination of the Cancun upgrade for the Execution Layer and the Deneb-upgrade for the Consensus Layer. The main goal of these improvements was the reduction in transaction costs and better performance for Layer 2 solutions.

These goals were more than achieved. According to data from the analysis platform Ycharts, the average gas fees of 72 Gwei (a Gwei corresponds to 10⁻⁹ ETH) have dropped to only 2.7 Gwei. Since the update, the gas fees for Ethereum have fallen by impressive 95 %, which is a significant progress in relation to the scalability and affordability of the network.

to illustrate this: A year ago, the costs for a simple swap were around $ 86, while a non-foamable token (NFT) transaction cost around $ 145. The price for an equivalent swap is currently only $ 0.39, and an NFT transaction only costs $ 0.65. These numbers delight the Ethereum users and show the effects of the Dencun upgrade.

ETH course falls

Despite the drastically reduced gas fees, Ethereum's course has fallen, which at first glance seems illogical. At the time of writing, the value of the digital currency is $ 1,893 and thus represents the lowest assessment since November 2023. In addition, this is a significant decline compared to the maximum in December when the course was still over $ 4,000

the next upgrade

The development at Ethereum continues, and the next big upgrade, Pectra, is already in the starting blocks. The test phase on the Sepolia test network started on March 5, 2025, but initially met with challenges such as error messages and empty blocks. Fortunately, the test network has now stabilized. With the PECTRA live gang, the available data for Layer-2 solutions (L2S) will be doubled and transaction costs will be reduced.

Overall, it shows that Ethereum goes through exciting changes both in the area of transaction fees and in the further development of the network, even if the ETH course is currently under pressure.
