The US Justice Ministry (DOJ) announced on Thursday that Aurelien Michel was charged with "Mutant Ape Planet 'NFTS, a kind of digital asset, in the amount of more than $ 2.9 million in cryptocurrency".
The defendant is a French citizen resident in the United Arab Emirates (VAE). He was arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Wednesday.
The Mutant Ape Planet (MAP) NFTS were marketed and sold with false promises of numerous rewards and advantages, including exclusive options for additional investments, advertising gifts, goods and other rewards, the doj explained in detail:
After the sale of the NFTS, the buyers were "pulled onto the carpet" ... The cryptocurrency of the NFT buyers worth millions was divided into Michel's personal advantage.

Ivan J. Arvelo, who was responsible for Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in New York, described: "Aurelien Michel committed a 'RUG Pull' program-he stole almost $ 3 million from investors for his own personal use."
The doj found that "Michel admitted the fraudulent 'wore sweater' in a social media chat with current and potential buyers, but blamed the NFT buyers 'community for his actions and explained:' We never intended to draw carpet, but the community went too poisonous."
While the NFT developers of Mutant Ape Planet "promised to finance a community wallet for marketing and raffle to buy giveaways, airdrops and tokens with staking functions, said the Doj:
The buyers of the Mutant Ape Planet NFTS have not received any of the promised advantages.
