XRP: David's revelation about the magic number of 100 billion tokens!
As of October 30, 2025, XRP continues to be one of the leading assets in the cryptocurrency market. With a precise total supply of 100,000,000,000, XRP carved its own niche among digital currencies. U.today reports that David Schwartz, the CTO of Ripple and one of the original architects of the XRP Ledger, explained the rationale behind this number.
The decision to mint XRP in this exact number was based on three pragmatic conditions. First, the quantity should ensure sufficient divisibility for micropayments, which are becoming increasingly important in the digital economy. Second, the number had to fit into a 64-bit integer, which takes into account technological possibilities and limitations. Third, the total amount should be easy for users to remember.
The design of XRP
From its inception, XRP was conceived as a high-throughput bridge asset, unlike Bitcoin, which is predominantly viewed as digital gold. According to Schwartz, XRP was designed specifically for micropayments long before other concepts like NFTs or DeFi became popular. This strategic planning makes XRP not only an important cryptocurrency but also a potential solution for real-world payment applications.
Currently, of the total 100 billion XRP, almost 60 billion are in circulation, while around 35 billion are locked in escrow accounts. This gives investors and users confidence in the stability and value of the currency. With a market price of $2.58, the value of XRP in circulation has already exceeded over $155 billion.
XRP has established itself as one of the global top four cryptocurrencies. It owes this position not only to its well-thought-out overall quantity, but also to its specific functionality in the digital financial system. The combination of technological advancements and strategic planning suggests that XRP will continue to play a significant role in the future.
