Charles Edwards, founder of Capriole Investments, made alarming statements about the security of Bitcoin at the TOKEN2049 conference on October 15, 2025. He warns that there is only a limited amount of time to respond to this technological threat.
Edwards is concerned about the possibility that quantum computers could break the elliptic curve cryptography used to secure Bitcoin in the next two to eight years. This would not only jeopardize the security of Bitcoin, but could also have a massive impact on the entire cryptocurrency ecosystem.
The serious threat to quantum computing technology
Additionally, McKinsey predicts that the point at which RSA encryption will be broken will be two to ten years away. This suggests that Bitcoin may face the consequences of quantum computing sooner. A study published in 2017 by Microsoft, BP, INQ and meta-researchers found that an available 2,300 logical qubits are needed to break Bitcoin's elliptic curve cryptography. However, this technology could be realized by 2028-2030, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
Urgent need for action and possible measures
Given these alarming predictions, Edwards has called on the Bitcoin community to immediately switch to quantum-resistant algorithms. These include solutions based on lattice cryptography or hash-based signatures. This shift would be necessary to avoid the risk of massive theft and loss of trust in the $2 trillion digital asset.
After implementing such quantum-safe solutions, users would also have to transfer their funds to new addresses. This represents an additional challenge and could cause significant difficulties for users if immediate action is not taken.
Edwards' warnings and recommendations are a strong appeal to Bitcoin developers and the entire crypto community to take a closer look at the challenges posed by quantum computing. This reminder could be crucial to ensuring the integrity and security of Bitcoin in the long term.
